Today I took a long walk in Wimbledon Common and went back to one of my favourite views around the two large ponds which is deserted even at weekends. I am particularly drawn to water the its transparency. The branches made beautiful pattens on the surface also on the foreshore. 40x40 cm oil on canvas

'In the transparent surface of the water' 40x40 cm oil on linen canvas. I had great pleasure painting this view as I have been going to Chiswick House many times and I always find it inspiring. I try and immerse myself with the flow of the trees and the weight and direction of my brushstrokes to find depth in what I am trying to express.

I’m doing a series of paintings of Bath . I love the light on the building and deep shadows in the river Avon. When it comes to trees, buildings and water it’s my favourite subject to paint. I always do small thumbnail sketches and think of the design before I embark on a painting.

Hampstead Heath the ponds. Over the years I have been drawn to Hampstead Heath it’s a park like no other. I can see how Constable found it inspiring too. I have made many studies and this a mid size painting 60x60 cm . I really enjoy the square format as well as a high horizon. Painting reflections I go into a zone mode as I never know how successful the result.

Little Venice I am not surprised that everyone lov

Little Venice I am not surprised that everyone loves coming here it’s a little oasis. The white stucco houses reflecting in the canal with the houseboats is a timeless view. I am doing a series of London views of river and gardens. Yesterday I noticed the cherry blossom coming out it gave such joy, even though the sky has been a battle ship grey for what seems ages.

Doing lots of sketches and working out compositions for painting when I get back in the studio it takes a while to get into the landscape and find interesting subjects. Also the hot weather concentrates the mind!

Sketching St John’s Cathedral in St John’s An

Sketching St John’s Cathedral in St John’s Antigua. The twin tower is impressive. It’s called a church within a church because after the first wooden structure built on this site in 1683-84 was destroyed by fire. The cathedral was given a pitch pine interior and stone exterior as a defence against both fire and earthquake . Using a wonderful Japanese pen which produces lost and found marks is perfect as it’s very hot so these rapid sketches in pen and watercolour are perfect materials to travel with.

A view from my window this small oil painting l painted in 2020! And I recently SOLD in a studio exhibition. I am going to miss it as some paintings just sparkle and this one does. It’s an unusual view of Venice where I have been many times and I try and find unique views in this beautiful city.
